Women of Color Quilters Guild in Dayton, OH Stitch Harriet Powers' Lost Lord's Supper Quilt

There are times when I am just speechless and extremely humbled.

As you may know, I've been researching Georgia quilter Harriet Powers for the last few years and wrote a book about how her two known Bible-themed quilts survived more than a century to be housed today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Smithsonian American History Museum. In the course of my research, a copy of an 1895/86 letter by Mrs. Powers was uncovered in Keokuk, Iowa.  Mrs. Powers wrote that in 1882 she "... composed a quilt of the Lord's Supper from the New Testament." For reasons outlined in the book, I believe in the possibility that a quilt by Mrs. Powers could have been sold to a woman in Keokuk - and that, if true - that quilt may have been sold at an 1959 auction in Keokuk.

Last year I couldn't shake this thought that a quilt by Mrs. Powers might still be somewhere in a family's collection. To help get the feeling out, I designed what I thought Mrs. Powers' lost Lord's Supper quilt might look like. Elyse Whittake-Paek took my funny stick-figure sketches and drew proper quilt blocks. Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi then took the quilt blocks and made the quilt now on the book cover.

Mrs. Harriet Powers' spirit was indeed in the project!  Recently Dr. Mazloomi shared the photos below of quilts lovingly stitched by members of the Women of Color Quilters Network, Dayton, Ohio chapter. These sistah quilters are Christians and know well the Bible stories in the Lord's Supper Quilt. I LOVE how they took the patterns and made the designs their own!  Don't you agree?  Look at how unique each interpretation is!  Congratulations, ladies!

Happy Mother's Day to the WOCQN - Dayton, Ohio!  Enjoy!

Free Bonus Quilt Block - The Lord's Supper Pattern Book

In celebration of Spring, here is a link to a free, bonus quilt block - The Angel protects Daniel in the Lion's Den. This block is in the design style of Georgia quilter Harriet Powers. One can use this block to make a pillow to go with the quilt I designed in "The Lord's Supper Pattern Book."  Or, I suppose a Sunday School class could also use this block for coloring (smile)!
Don't you think illustrator Elyse Whittaker-Paek did a wonderful job capturing Mrs. Powers' style?  Hope you enjoy the pattern.  Happy Spring!

Michelle Obama Inauguration Coat - Butterwick B5396

Have you seen the Butterwick pattern B5396 featuring the coat the First Lady wore on a certain January 2009 breezy day? Take a moment to read the blog post from Carolyn at Day of a Sewing Fanatic - She reviews both the yellow dress jacket and a tan and black coat Mrs. Obama wore (see Butterwick B5399). Barack Obama Redwork Block Pattern - FREE

Will you be visiting Lancaster, PA between June 6 and December 31, 2008? Stop by the Heritage Center Museum for the exhibit "Patchwork Politics: From George to George W." The exhibit will feature a variety of quilts and other textile items from Presidential campaigns past. Unfortunately, there is not a catalog planned for this exhibit. No word yet on if there will be an exhibition checklist.

If you're a regular visitor to the Black Threads blog, you know I'm interested in hearing from those stitching quilts, wallhangings, or fabric postcards about the 2008 US Presidential election.

Have you seen Michael G. Buckingham's softcover book, Presidential Redwork: A Stitch in Time? In the 80 page book are patterns for each of the US Presidents as well as historical patriotic designs in redwork like the Great Seal of the United States, the American Eagle, the Liberty Bell, the White House, Old Glory and more. Of course, there's not a pattern for the winner of the 2008 US Presidential election. But, that shouldn't stop you!

As a gift from the Black Threads blog, I hope you enjoy this FREE redwork quilt block pattern featuring Barack Obama. Just click here to download it. In the next post is a block featuring Hillary Clinton. I hope you and your quilting friends enjoy!

Hillary Clinton Redwork Pattern Quilt Block

How exciting were the Iowa Caucuses this evening!? I listened to each of the speeches by the candidates afterwards and was so inspired by Barack Obama's passionate appeal for a better America, for hope. Pine Burr Quilt Pattern

Did you know the Official State Quilt of Alabama is the Pine Burr? The quilt involves cutting fabric squares, folding the squares into triangles, and sewing the triangles to the quilt foundation fabric. One quilt could include thousands of triangles or burrs. The result is spectacular! You can make a Pine Burr Quilt using Quilter Loretta Pettway Bennett's pattern:

- Page 1 - 6 steps
- Page 2 - how to place on foundation
- Burr template

Arkansas quilter Mary Allen Smith Williams stitched this Pine Cone Quilt (photo) ca. 1950.
