Black Art Project

If you are interested in Black Art - you should bookmark George-McKinley Martin's blog titled the Black Art Project. He describes himself as an "[a]rt librarian, historian, and collector driven by a passion to raise the visibility of black art history and the work of black artists through documentation, education, and advocacy."

You will find info on the latest exhibits of African American art nationally. Now, I like to document aspects of African American quilting. I'm an infant compared to Mr. Martin, who is amazing! He has assembled an ANNUAL list of Black Art exhibits. And, for the truly serious among us, you've got to see his list of African American Art Books on WorldCat. Enjoy!

Tricia Waddell - Editor-in-Chief, Stitch Magazine

Tricia Waddell, editor-in-chief of Stitch Magazine, recently announced that the bi-annual publication is moving to quarterly! Burda Style recently published an online interview with Ms. Waddell. According to the interview, she's a crafter herself:
"I love to make stuff period, so I do all sorts of crafts. I enjoy knitting, jewelry-making, mixed-media artwork, hand embroidery, and most recently I have been learning to weave. I definitely combine crafts, especially the fiber-related crafts. I love adding custom handcrafted touches like embroidery or beading to my sewing projects. And I want to add more fiber techniques into my mixed-media work."
What do you like best about Stitch? If you are not familiar with Stitch Magazine, do visit the Stitch blog! Enjoy!

Update:
Carol - thanks for sharing that the Burda link is no longer working. Sorry about that! Here's a link to a YouTube video interview with Ms. Waddell by PinkChalkTV. Enjoy!

Sherise Marie Wright - Chicago Quilter

Wanted to introduce you to the quilts of Sherise Marie Wright. I haven't met her personally, but have seen her work on her blog, The Soul of Quilting. She says of her work:
"My love for quilting began at the age of three years old when I watched my great-grandmother quilting in the living room of our home. At that point in my life I was engrossed with color, fabric, creativity, and passion. My overall goal as a fiber artist is to create quilts that resonate with my own spirit and soul. My quilts are a diary of my heart and spirit. I'm very passionate and pleased to share my dreams and visions with others. I believe my quilts are whimisical and exciting to create."

Fiber Artists for Obama & Cherryl Floyd-Miller's Obama Quilting Story

Fabric CAN capture our times, thoughts, and feelings. The online group - Fiber Artists for Obama - are in the process of making a FIERCE quilt about their favorite candidate. Many members have designed a special block for the collective quilt being made, thanks to Diana Bracy's leadership in organizing the actual quilt. In the photo here is the block by Lisa Shepard Stewart. Do visit Cherryl FLoyd-Miller's blog for more photos of the quilt blocks.

And, if you have five minutes, you MUST read Cherryl's personal blog post about the Obama-themed quilt she's making - the blocks include significant events in the 2008 Democratic Nomination process... Oprah's endorsement, Caroline Kennedy's support, Hillary Clinton as the Queen of Hearts... and, of course, Michelle Obama's loving support. Personally, I'm eager to see Cherryl's final masterpiece! Enjoy!
