African American Art Quilts From the Hackley Collection


"African American Art Quilts From the Hackley Collection" is on exhibit at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft on view through March 29 at 715 W. Main St., Louisville, KY 40202. (502) 589-0102. Hackley is noted Kentucky folk-art collector Larry Hackley of Berea, KY. The quilts include the one in the photo made by Sarah Mary Tyler. Enjoy!

I had the privilege of meeting and interviewing Sarah Mary Tyler several times before her death. She was a very impressive lady and talked openly about her work, her designs and what they did and did not mean. She also had a wicked sense of humor about telling people what they wanted to hear.

She also was very candid about welcoming the recognition she received, but was fully cognizant and forthright about the fact that she still had to struggle because despite its acclaim she received at most a couple of hundred dollars for her work - and that much only a couple of years before her death.
