TheRoot.com new online magazine

Check out www.TheRoot.com - a new website by the Washington Post company. This online magazine is targeted to African Americans - with news and commentary on politics and culture as well as tools for researching one's family genealogy. Henry Louis Gates Jr is the editor of TheRoot.com. Lynette Clemetson is the Managing Editor. Check out the site or read article from the New York Times (photo by Librado Romero). Let's hope there will be future stories on African American quilting and quilters! Enjoy!

In the political realm, when are we going to talk about the fact that the country is in the shape it's in bc of GREED? Everyone wants large cars, large homes (they can't afford), and we as people of color do such ridiculous things as pay $500 for a purse, or thousands for a gold chain

many black people are stuck on images. many of us feel that we have to validate our significance by wearing expensive items, driving expensive cars and living extremely beyond our means. Many of us our looking for acceptance. It is important that we find our significance from within. Everything else is just vain.

I hate generalizations. Black folks are as diverse as any group on the planet. All are not Democrats nor Republicans. You will serve your constituency well to provide a broad perspective when dealing with subjects that affect the Black community. All Black folks are not poor neither do all Blacks spend $500.00 on a purse or wear expensive chains when they can't afford it.

Sirronvee...You are so correct. My "Bad." We are definitely not a monolithic group. I got caught-up in generalizing as we all sometimes do. As you said, we are not all poor. We have a broad spectrum of lower, middle and upper class citizens. I am especially proud of the people of color that are doing well in the DC tri-state area, Atlanta, GA area and parts of the Carolinas. I moved to South Florida about 4 years ago, and as of yet I am not impressed with the people of color here. Not to insult anyone, but it has been my observation (and MY observation only) that generally speaking, the people are not very sophisticated, and I might add that includes all shades, WHITE, Black, Red, Brown, etc. I'm not saying that all people here are not refined, but I will go out on a limp and say they are few and far, far between.

Congratulations

theroot.com should provide good dialogue between people about some vital issues that we face in this country and the world.
We are now in a contentious campaign to choose a new U.S. President. The main issue that people are engaged upon is whether there shall be as President a black male ,a white male or a white female. The real issues to be faced are militarism, poverty, health care. These issues are now upon us and will be after this election.
The question as to whether the candidate shall be Democratic or Republican, will depend upon who best can strengthen the military and the assisting mercenary corporations in the policing of the world.Economic and health concerns will then follow in rank.

I blame the news media, specifically when there is a "Debate" format, for not asking the really hard questions that pertain to people of color and poor communities. And that's not to say that all people of color are poor, bc they most certainly are not.
