"Holding Grandmother's Quilt" Mural in Philadelphia

Donald Gensler created the two-part mural, "Holding Grandmother's Quilt" in 2004 with the assistance of Angela Crafton and students from the University of Pennsylvania. The mural is located at Aspen St and N 39th Street. One part shows local resident elder Ruth Jones sewing a quilt while three children, in the second mural, hold onto the bottom the quilt. These murals are part of the Philadelphia program, Mural Arts Program. Are there any quilt-themed murals in your neighborhood? Enjoy!

The exhibit "Of Hearth and Home Art & Quilt" opens at the Riley House and Museum in Tallahassee, FL through January 31, 2010. The show features the paintings of self-taught artist Eluster Richardson (photo) and the quilts of 95 years old Amanda Richardson, the artist's mom.
Click here to read an article about the show from the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper. There's also a fabulous slide show featuring 14 images from the exhibit. Dear Mr. Richardson - the quilt world needs a catalog of your quilt creations! Enjoy!

Jonathan Green paints Sheldon Quilts

Thanks to Willa for sending me a link to Naples, FL painter Jonathan Green's website. For three years I put one of his wall calendars up. This year Jonathan Green has created a dozen different quilt-inspired paintings, including the one in the photo here. Sheldon Quilts is oil on canvas and measures 11 inches by 14 inches. It's available for sale for .... $10,000. Enjoy!

Self-Portraiture - Have you tried it?

Gwen Magee had a comprehensive post on Self-Portraiture on her blog, Textile Arts Resources Guide several weeks ago. She links to reasons why artists need to create self-portraits, tools to get started, and decisions for capturing your self on canvass. Don't laugh - here's a self-portrait I did a couple years ago. Just call it Kyra and the Rooster at Big Ben. (I know, stick to quilting!) Enjoy!
