Mark your calendar if you're in the Charleston, SC area - "Honoring Zora: Stitching Wise Words, Art Quotes, and Art Quilts" goes on exhibit May 6 through June 13, 2010. Co-curators are Cookie Washington and Arianne King Comer. The opening reception, with a cool jazz band and songstress Ann Caldwell, is May 6 from 6pm - 8pm at 10 Storehouse Row in North Charleston. The exhibit will "explore and depict themes and images of the Harlem Renaissance, garnering inspiration from quotes by Zora Neale Hurston, considered one of the pre-eminent writers of twentieth-century African-American literature. A short film about local African-American quilters will be presented during the exhibition."
On Monday, May 3 from noon to 1:30pm, there is a free screening of "The Wayshowers," a documentary about Low Country African American quilters "re-inventing the story quilt tradition." Cookie Washington will present a quilt and fiber art workshop there on May 4 9am - noon. She will explore how words influence art. Enjoy!
